Changing Address on your Malaysian IC

Introduction

Every Malaysian will be issued a national identification card (IC) once you celebrate your twelfth birthday. On the IC, your address will be displayed along with your photo and your IC number, which is unique to every Malaysian. Your first address will likely be that of your parents, but like us, likely you will need to update it, say after moving out from your parents place as you start work, and purchase your own home.

Why Update Your Address

The address on your IC is pretty important, as most official dealings (for example where you vote) will be based on the address on your IC. So it would be best to update it whenever you move (say moving state to work), especially so when you have a permanent place of your own.

How to Update Your Address

The Malaysian IC is administered by Jabatan Pemdaftaran Negara (JPN). Hence, for anything IC related, we need to do it at a JPN office. For us we headed to an Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) that usually opens till 9 on weekdays. Unless of course you are visiting during the Ramadhan month, please check their operating hours online (in our case it closes at 430pm).

  • Prepare a printout of any utility document (TNB, Unifi, Astro, etc) with the company logo and the address you would like to update to clearly displayed. The bill DOES NOT need to be in your name.
  • Ensure you are wearing a dark top as JPN will be taking a photo on the spot. Ensure you comb your hair, put on makeup, etc as you will be carrying this photo in your wallet for a long time.
  • Bring along your current IC, which will need to be surrendered at the counter.
  • Bring along a credit card as JPN only accepts cashless payment.
  • Walk up to the customer service counter to get your queue number. Let them know that you are there to update your address on your IC. They will check to ensure that you have the necessary documents.
  • Wait for your number to be called. At the counter, hand over your hard copy printout of your utility bill, your current IC and let them know you intend to update the address on your IC.
  • Follow the officers instructions which includes getting your thumbprint verified, photo taken and completing payment of RM10
  • You will be notified on the wait time, for us, it took less than 30 mins for our updated IC to be ready.
  • You can check the status of your new IC via: this website
  • Note that My Temu Janji might no longer be honoured by the JPN center, it was not for us.
